Building Background Knowledge
This unit focuses on helping to build background knowledge on human rights. Students take a closer look at the introduction and certain articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Poetry
Students will look at several examples of poetry to become familiar in writing their own. They will focus on poetry with a human rights theme.
Esperanza's Story
This unit will focus on the character development of Esperanza. Children will explore ways that literature can help to tell powerful stories. They will closely read this novel to find contextual clues for evidence of the historical and geographical setting during the great depression and for a Mexican Immigrant.
